Film Club: This year we are viewing "Mimi's Picks". The film club meets 1 Friday a month at the Nanuet Library at 10:00 AM. Venue is subject to change. A donation of $1 is requested to cover refreshments. Discussions before and after the film are conducted by Mimi Rasiel. The film club meets from September – June every year. - Greetings! - A Comedy at Penguin Rep Theatre: Friday May 20, 2011 - Join us for a hilarious and heartwarming vivit with a family blessed by an unexpected miracle. When Andy returns home for the holidays with his fiancee, clutures collide, beliefs are challneged, and truths are told. Details and Registration
- Wadworth-Atheneum Museum: Monet's Water Lilies and other Collections: Wednesday May 25 – The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art is world renowned for several collections. Today, we will have an in-depth guided tour of Monet’s Water Lilies: An Artist’s Obsession. This is a unique opportunity to view these one-of-a-kind paintings collected from all over America and exhibited under one roof. Lunch will be at a lovely restaurant with views of the park. Please select an entrée: Tuscan herbed grilled chicken w/ balsamic glaze, sole picatta in lemon caper sauce or pasta w/ spinach, sun dried tomatoes, capers & gorgonzola in a light marinara cream sauce. Salad, rice, vegetables, coffee/tea and dessert are included. Any dietary restrictions must be requested in advance. After lunch, we will return to the museum where we will have a highlight tour of its other exhibits including American & European decorative arts & furnishings, costumes & textiles and the Hudson River School Collection considered the finest of its kind held by any museum. There will be enough time to peruse your favorite collection on your own, if you so choose. The bus will leave at 8:00 am promptly and will return by 6:30 pm. - Harlem on my Mind - A Narrated Walking/Bus Tour: Tuesday June 21, 2011 – This is Harlem like you’ve never seen before. This walking/bus tour combo will show you this architecturally and culturally impressive neighborhood and its origins. Start by boarding the bus in Nanuet and head over to our first stop in Harlem to pick up our guide, Justin Ferate. We’ll see charming streets with handsome homes en route to several highlighted locations. We’ll enjoy a guided tour of the Palladian style 8,500 square foot Morris-Jumel Mansion. Built in 1765, this mansion, with its remarkable history, features stained glas & French Empire style furnishings and objects that are original to the Mansion. Lunch will be at Amy Ruth’s. Menu to follow. After lunch, we’ll view Sugar Hill, Alexander Hamilton Grange, Audubon Terrace with its collection of museums and numerous other sites. Also included in the tour will be views of the surviving Jewish landmarks of Harlem. We will visit the former and magnificent Temple Israel. It is now the very well preserved Mount Olive Baptist Church and we are hoping to gain access to it. Please wear comfortable shoes. Bus will leave promptly at 7:45 am from the Nanuet Mall, upper level, in back by Macy's. Return at around 5 pm. Fee is $90/$100 nonmember. Fee includes transportation, admission, tour guide & lunch. - Picasso's Vollard Suite: The Sculptor's Studio at Bruce Museum of Art: Tuesday June 28, 2011 - Join us for a guided tour of this special exhibition at Bruce Museum (1 Museum Dr., Greenwich, CT). In 1932, Pablo Picasso purchased the château Boisgeloup in Normandy, where he set himself up with a fully appointed studio for sculpture, a medium to which he would devote himself in the years to come. The excitement of working in the three-dimensional art form, which had always been subsidiary to pictorial art for Picasso, inspired one of the great series of modern prints, “The Sculptor’s Studio. This exhibition will feature key images of The Sculptor’s Studio etchings from the group of 100 prints he made for the legendary art dealer and publisher Ambroise Vollard. After lunch (on our own), we’ll head over to the Greenwich Arts Council where we’ll view an exhibit by the Art Society of Old Greenwich (299 Greenwich Ave., Greenwich, CT). - Summertime Classics at the NY Philharmonic: Thursday June 30, 2011 – With Summertime Classics you’re treated to the same musical virtuosity of the Philharmonic, but with a distinct summertime flair. Enjoy a one-of-a-kind performance full of fun and energy, not to mention the dazzling wit and colorful commentary of conductor Bramwell Tovey. Program: Khachaturian Waltz from Masquerade, Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1, Glazunov Concert Waltz No. 2 & Borodin Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor . - Food Lovers' Fantasy: Manhattan's Best Gourmet Markets: Tuesday July 19, 2011 - Come along with us on a guided daylong trip as we shop and sample our way through the best food emporiums in the city. Our Guide, Dianne, will entertain us with the history of each area we visit. Start at Zabar’s, long the standard for gourmet delicacies. Continue on to Todd English Food Hall at the Plaza Hotel. From there, we’ll visit Grand Central Station. Lunch will be on our own at one of the many restaurants and cafes there. We’ll visit Eataly, the new Italian market and restaurant complex owned by celebrity chefs Lidia Bastianich and Mario Batalli. Our last stop will be Bleeker Street in Greenwich Village where you’ll find shops like Murray’s Cheese, Amy’s Bread and Rocco’s Italian Bakery. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a cooler for your food purchases. This tour is sure to be sold out, so sign up ASAP. - Philadelphia Belle Cruise & Rosenbach Museum: Wednesday July 27, 2011 -Our day starts in Nanuet as we board the bus to Philadelphia. Join us for a narrated cruise aboard the new Philadelphia Belle. Enjoy the ride along the Delaware River while partaking in a lovely lunch on board. Following lunch, board the bus for a short ride to the Rosenbach Museum. The Rosenbach’s 1860s townhouse and garden provide an intimate setting for extensive collections of rare books, manuscripts, furniture, silver, paintings, prints, drawings, and sculpture. The house features exhibitions drawn from the Rosenbach’s impressive holdings. Selections from some of the best-known collections are always on view, including James Joyce’s manuscript for Ulysses, & original drawings by children’s book author/illustrator Maurice Sendak. Since our group will be divided in 2, you will have a chance to meander through Rittenhouse Square with its charming plaza, reflecting pool, park, shops and outdoor sculptures. Board our bus and return home at about 7:00 PM. Our bus will leave from the Nanuet Mall, Upper Level, in back by Macy's at 8:15 AM. - Culinary Institute of America & Francis Loeb Museum: Tuesday August 9, 2011 - Board our bus and join us for a fabulous lunch at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park. Today we will lunch at Caterina De Medici Restaurant. Menu: Roman grain with roasted vegetable salad, braised veal with potato puree and mushrooms, warm chocolate lava cake w/ vanilla gelato, coffee/tea or iced tea. Dietary restrictions are accommodated but you must call us ahead of time with details. Following lunch, we’ll board the bus for our visit to Francis Loehman Loeb Museum on the beautiful grounds of Vassar College. The museum is well known for its collections of antiquities, 19th & 20th century American & European art, Asian Art, photographs and prints. We will have a guided highlight tour of these collections with time on your own to peruse and enjoy the feature exhibition A Taste of the Modern. Return home by 5:00 pm. - Line Dancing: Mondays starting May 2, 2011 - Kick up your heels and join us in learning country line dancing. No partner needed. You'll have great fun. Please do no wear sneakers, wear light clothing and bring water to class. No prior experience needed. $84 for all 8 sessions, or try one class for $11 (call ahead for the trial class). - Knitting & Crocheting Club - TBA - Whether you are a beginner or an expert, join us and have fun. Bring your own project or start one at the workshop. This is mainly a social club where you'll knit & crochet, share patterns and techniques, but assistance will be available from 2 expert knitters. Come join the fun!!!
