We the People/Project Citizen Workshop

Both We the People and Project Citizen are programs affiliated with the Center for Civic Education and co-sponsored by the New York StateBar Association. These programs are government funded through the No Child Left Behind Act. Center for Civic Education and the NYS Bar Association are providing: FREE professional development orientation to both programs, receive a free set of textbooks (30 copies) plus a teacher’s edition, materials and strategies to be used in the classroom, and dinner or lunch will be served. The goal of the We the People program is to teach civic education in the classroom. The content of the course deals with the establishment of the US government, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Subsequent chapters deal with the application of the Bill of Rights to everyday life and the final unit deals with the role of the citizen not only in the US but also in a global society. In the NYS curriculum, the We the People program follows the standards for grades five, seven and eight, and high school.  There are appropriate texts for each level. Project Citizen is a hands-on program. It stresses competent and responsible participation in local and state governments. Students will be expected to identify a community question and plan some form of action. It will help them monitor and influence public policy.  The Project Citizen program can be used in middle school and high school, especially in the Participation in Government course (grade 12).
